My Story

Before coming to ARISE Children’s Village, Ykenson’s world was fragile and uncertain. He was living with his grandfather and young mother, who struggled with mental illness after experiencing deep trauma. Life was already difficult—but when Hurricane Matthew struck, it took what little shelter they had. With nowhere else to go, they survived under a salvaged roof, exposed to the elements and clinging to survival. Ykenson’s grandfather, overwhelmed and desperate, begged for help—aching to give his grandson a future he couldn’t provide. ​In May 2017, at just three years old, Ykenson was welcomed into a new beginning at ARISE Children’s Village. He quickly adapted to the safety, love, and stability of his new home. Today, he no longer wonders where he’ll sleep or whether he’ll be cared for. He’s growing, thriving, and surrounded by people who believe in his future.
